LESLIE NEWMAN | FLUTE

“…an object lesson

 in how to give

life to music.”

- PAN (Journal of the British Flute Society)

biography

“To play as powerfully, as sensitively and as flawlessly as flutist Leslie Newman did… is to write the book on stamina and musical excellence. Bottom line: one of the highlights of the season.” This is how critics have described Leslie who, since her Toronto Symphony Orchestra debut at the age of eighteen, performing Carl Nielsen’s formidable Flute Concerto under the baton of Sir Andrew Davis, has developed a loyal audience with her lyricism, technical command and musical integrity.

Leslie is the principal flute with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, a post she has held since 2008. As guest principal flute, she has played with the Hallé Orchestra under Kent Nagano, the Bournemouth Symphony, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra, National Ballet Orchestra and Esprit. She has toured through Brazil, Argentina, Japan, Europe and the U.S. with Sir Simon Rattle and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

THREE is an innovative chamber group born through the collaboration of favourite Canadian soloists and good friends Guy Few, Nadina Mackie Jackson and Leslie Newman. With a combined mastery of flute, trumpet, corno, bassoon, piano and the human voice, THREE’s programming is versatile and eclectic, ranging from the masterpieces of Western Europe to Argentinean tangos to newly commissioned works by Canada’s own great composers. Their 2015 Maritime tour celebrated the release of their self-titled cd, THREE.

“Music is not something they do, it is who they are, inside and out…”

Leslie and Erica’s performances have taken them from Edmonton to Montreal, including a recital on Music Toronto’s renowned chamber music series at the Jane Mallett Theatre. Critics have praised their performances of Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra:

“Their cohesion and almost telepathic empathy melded into what was a utter delight…Enthralled and mesmerized are descriptions that come immediately to mind.”

– Ontario Arts Review

and with the Montreal Chamber Orchestra:

“Both very elegant and responding smoothly to each other as two musicians having long played together, they dominated the stage…overshadowing everything around them…”

– Claude Gingras, La Presse, Montreal)
